Advanced Meter Installation

When choosing a type of advanced meter to install, would you recommend socket mount meters either directly on or near the transformer feeding a building or would you go for installing a panel mount meter in the existing main distribution panel?

I am wondering about the pro/cons of each setup.

On the transformer makes transformer replacement more difficult.

Revenue meter location will be dictated by the utility. The main service panel or main distribution board is a good location for owner meters. You will have a larger selection with panel mount meters. Many of the larger breakers have metering built in or available as an option. You can scroll through a wide range of parameters. Check your breaker catalogs for the options available.
