Hi All,

One pipe manufacturer asked me if it is acceptable to manufacture 7.5 meter length ASTM A106 Gr.B 1.1/2" Sch80 pipes using 6.0 meter A106 Gr.B 2" Sch80 pipes by cold drawn method.

As far as I understand, the acceptable starting material type for seamless pipe can be ingot, bloom or billet as clearly specified in API 5L Table 3.

However there is no clear such statement in ASTM A106.

Can seamless pipe be a starting material type for seamless pipes under ASTM?

Thanks in advance.

It is acceptable provided they do all the destructive and non-destructive tests required by the code after the cold draw forming process.
Although casting and ladle analyses from the starting pipes will not be affected by the cold forming process.

* Finding a solution is great * Knowing how to implement it is fantastic * Believing it is the only one and best is naive ?

K dg,
Cold drawing pipes results in strain-hardening that results in higher strength.
Check your service. Many application like sour, severe cyclic service prohibits the use.

Of course it is fine. For smaller sizes it is likely that it has been re-drawn many times.
The only thing that they would keep from the original MTR is the chemistry and source country.
They would have to re-heat treat, test mechanical properties, do required destructive tests, and do the required NDT.
