Can anyone tell me if filler metal can be used to weld A790 pipe? I cannot find anything in the specs I have. The weld is for 304L, and we are making welded pipe.

Thanks

What do you mean 'making welded pipe? The pipe seam welds are all autogenous and then fully annealed.
Are you welding a piece of 304L to a piece of duplex? If so then use the filler recommended for the duplex. Look in the welding guidelines published by Outokumpu.

My shop has to make a piece of larger diameter pipe. Some specs like A312 are autogenous like you mentioned however others such as A358 either require or allow the addition of filler metal. And still some that are autogenous allow a small precentage of filler metal for weld repairs. I do not have easy access to the list of ASTM pipe specs to determine what is allowed.

I reviewed ASME SA 790, the specification states clearly that NO filler metal shall be used (see 6.1.1 of ASME SA 790) for welded pipe.

Great!

Thanks to everyone for your help!
