Has anybody ever used one this size at 480V. I am wanting to use a 6000A circuit breaker as my cross tie between (2) 2500kVA transformers on each side and was told they don't make them that big.

IS this a primary or secondary service? How about some Metal Enclosed Switchgear with interlocks and ties on the primary side?

"Throughout space there is energy. Is this energy static or kinetic! If static our hopes are in vain; if kinetic — and this we know it is, for certain — then it is a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery to the very wheelwork of nature". – Nikola Tesla

I have another question: Why is the bus tie necessary? Could you simply put an extra transformer in the system with a breaker going to each bus in place of the tie? This way you could switch on the 5th transformer in the event you need extra power on one of the buses and not worry about ever connecting them. Granted, not the cheapest solution, but perhaps less maintenance. You could also spec this transformer to have a higher impedance and possibly a lower KVA rating which would lower your fault currents significantly.

I also like davidbeach's suggestion.

If it is broken, fix it. If it isn't broken, I'll soon fix that.

Great idea turbineGen - I like that one. Eliminate the tie breaker and put a transformer in the middle that swings both ways. This will be a secondary service with metal clad gear.

Just be sure to interlock the breakers or you could end up creating a bus tie and be right back where you started. The nice tyhing about a switchable spare is it allows for more load in the future as well.
