Does anyone know if there is a benefit to passivating 440c? Carbide tools are used for all machining operations.

It all depend on its' application, many stainless alloys will form a passive chromium oxide layer just being exposed to air after a few days to weeks. What will the 440C be exposed to?

If you used Carbide tools I would at least pickle the 440c to remove any contaminates on the surface.

When I hacve a chance I'll pull my ASM handbooks and let you know what they say.

MIL-T-5624(Fuel), JP-4 and JP-5. Pickle in what type of solution?
