316 St St Seawater Applications

Hi everyone, wondering if anyone can help me...

Is 316 Stainless Steel a suitable material for use in sea water applications?

What about if the seawater is deaerated? I know that Carbon steels can be quite resisitant to seawater if the seawater is de-aerated, but i am unsure about Stainless. Will the chlorine content still be a problem?

Stainless Steel in seawater can be used but only is specific conditions, not stagnant for example, and depends also on the application.
in de aerated water it will be more difficult for SS to repassivate..
As a general rule should be "not recommmend" but there are some cases where it can be used.

We use some pretty exotic materials for valves in sea water,, monel, stellite etc stagnant unaerated water is the worst.
The organisation - National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) have specifications for Sulphide stress corrosion (SSC) and Stress corrosion cracking (SCC). These have been generated with specific regard to materials in this environment which has been built up with experience gained from the Petro/chem industry specifically oil rigs and pipelines. Thier specifications for 'acceptable' materials will save you a great deal of time(not money I'm afraid) but well worth a read is you can get hold of the literature.
I have a document relating to NACE and this subject I need to write up very shortly.
