Does any one here have experience of crush testing of large bearing balls ?

1) Im setting up a specification for the purchase of large (say 50~70mm) carbon chrome steel balls and want to include a strength test. I see some ball manufacturers qualify the strength of their products using a 2 ball compression test, while some put 3 balls in compression. If the same balls were tried in both, which test is likely to give the higher result and by how much ?

2) What metalurgical parameters are most influential on ball crush strength ? Hardness, homogeneity of material structure, or perhaps material purity ?

Your comments will be appreciated.
