From a metallurgical and mechanichal point of view which are the drawbacks to making the valve seats from oxy-cut Astm 240 316 sheet metal versus making them from a forged ring or rolled bar?

Is it a problem only for the grain rolling direction transverse to the valve pressure and flow?

Plasma cut? 300 SS can't be cut with oxy-fuel. I see two drawbacks using plasma, you'll waste a lot of material cutting away the heat affected zone. You'll chew up a lot of tooling with interrupted cuts and breaking through the slag.

Water jet w abrasive cuts SS quite well.

No opinion on use of plate for valve seats, tho.

Regards

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
