Is 17-4 not suitable for all sour gass apllications or does NACE limit the material to have special requirments? Having a hard time getting a straight answer.

have a look at nace / iso 15156 part 3. In para A.8 you'll find the precipitation hardened stainelss steel and the application limits for UNS S17400 or 17-4 PH.
