1000Base-BX to 1000Base-T conversion

Hi Guys,
Anybody has familiarity with 1000Base-BX to 1000Base-T conversion using Broadcom or any other vendor Ethernet PHY?
I am using a BCM5464S without MDIO/MDC connection as a media converter. Will this work with just hardware bootstrapping only or I will definitely have to have a small 8 bit controller on the board to talk to MDIO/MDC for register configuration?
