I worked for Smokey on and off for a few years, he fired me 4 times. Between firings I helped Ralph Johnson and a few others and many a time yanked HVC engines. There were a lot of badly warped and melted exhaust flanges and more. High temps were a real issue that placed the designs. Modern...
KI for Natural gas varies wildly. Pure Methane is high, Natural gas with propane, butane and other "anes" has a lower KI. I have seen some cog samples that were not much better than 93 octane pump gas due to other heavy molecule junk in the fuel.
In my early experiences with methanol vs gasoline I saw a small but consistently measurable increase in peak torque, presumably because the methanol molecule contains oxygen.. So, in a way it was liquid supercharging more oxygen into the combustion process.
Allowing marginally increased exh valve oil loss will increase valve life a little but the erosion corrosion is mostly the result of higher static temperatures of the valve and seat along with the higher rate of erosion. I was involved with helping a company develop an additive optimized for...
Compositepro, Pre-Ignition cannot be described as knock. Preignition is early ignition by any other means except a timed spark that normally initiates combustion. Preignition can lead to detonation and if you are that lucky then yes there is some audible knock but real preignition is silent...
dgallup, If the needle and seat are adequately hard and the guides are of a low friction design using unpolished gall resisting metals, a chlorinated graphite impregnated wax (non oil base sinter bronze lube) seemed to work well. Doping the injector with this after the initial run-in using...
As for ethane, it is good fuel for a genset and other stationary apps. If anything, in your application I would consider doping with an additive that prevents sulfur deposits inside the injectors. Just be sure not to use an oil based additive carrier, stick with alky free aero-solvent.
dgallup, Siemens/Continental Deka CNG and Bosch NGI2 are designed to survive running totslly dry. The materials we were messing with in the late 90's were not quite up to it but for over a decade now dry is doable. The injectors come prelubed and as long as they get a good lube to assist with...
I used to work for a mfg/supplier of rails and injectors. Modern rails for some brands are returnless because it helps to reduce heating of stored fuel and helps keep the light ends in solution. It woulds like you are dealing with very low fuel pressure.. What is the rail pressure your pumps...
Modern OE tools and materials can produce a much better initial product.. Much of the ring and bore wall breakin that was associated with older engines is pretty much a thing of the past. Breakin oil is reclaimed and reused after extensive filtering and the engine is characterized to determine...
I supplied my own pt tables to a dozen koreans engineers but they had a tech with little in the way of acedemic exp who "got it" first and helped translate.. Hope they promoted the guy in spite of little formal education. Suburban Propane provided me with the contact who set up a test run of...
