Long Range Motion Sensor / Zero Speed

You might want to check out the new Keyence PX-series infa-red optical sensors. If memory serves, they claim to have one that can read up to 40 M',they are dirt resistant and IP-67 rated. The one I had demonstrated can see thru your finger. Keyence is not cheap, but they do make some nifty...

Benefits of NEMA rated control relays versus IEC

Here some practical factors to consider when you are determining which spec. to use. 1)Life cycle of the equipment. a)IEC = shorter cycles, 5yrs or less. b)NEMA = longer than 10 years 2)Enviroment. a)IEC = packaging operation. b)NEMA = steel mill/foundry. 3)duty cycle. a) IEC =...

What is the best engineering advice you ever received?

Tinytim22, " Computers dont't make mistakes, but people entering data do" If this was true, companies wouldn't need I.T. departments. It was either the computer or a woman, I just know it! I can't find my lost shaker of salt! Regards, Afterhrs

    Naval AC power

IRstuff, For the high volume manufacturing sector, you are absolutely correct. When it comes to many other arenas, incuding the machines that are used for manufacturing, I will continue to employ this philosophpy. [cheers] Very best regards, Afterhrs

SSN-702 U.S.S Phoenix It was an invaluable experience, I was taught this phrase that I still use to this day. You get what you INSPECT, not what you EXPECT. Regards, afterhrs

    Naval AC power

ScottI2R It has been over 10 yrs since I was on a boat(submarine). I will say that we used 400 hz for cooling fans and various other "items." In my world, I understood the reasoning to be a size driven issue and the weight was just an added benefit. Regards, Afterhrs Ask me no...

What is the best engineering advice you ever received?

This one is for the people that will appreciate a collision between a redneck saying and the human side of engineering "Be careful when being mean to people and critters, they just might learn thier lesson." This saying is the southern take on Confucius. Regards, Afterhrs

Help - project for a electrical newbie. - Fan , Switch, Battery

Or you could get a back pack, a smaller 12v battery(lawnmower), and purshase some defrosting strips that are used in the rear windows of vehicles. I bet a clever guy like you could even arrange the defrosting strips in some sort of crosshair pattern to improve your marksmanship. Regards, Afterhrs

Voltage Drop when starting large motors

I am curious to know if you added an additional 1kva transformer to the control cabinet when you added the SLC-5/04

    Capacitors containing PCB's

ScottI2R, I hope you work for a company that keeps excellent records. I would get the serial number from each machine sold to that customer and check the bill of material in the original build specifications. The bill of material might also include the date and companies for all purchased...

MechE trying to understand VFD operating numbers!!

cnuk, If you still have issues with this drive, do not hesitate to call the local rep. A VFD can become your worst enemy or best friend, the key is to choose the correct parameters for your application. Good luck, Afterhrs

MechE trying to understand VFD operating numbers!!

cnuk, Check your wiring also, I have witnessed a 230 VAC VFD run a motor wired for 460 VAC. The motor would stall under heavy load and be cool to the touch. I added a few grey hairs on that problem. Regards, afterhrs

MechE trying to understand VFD operating numbers!!

cnuk, I agree with hoy7t, something is definitely NOT correct with your application. The first sign is that you state you have a 20 HP motor running at 30 HZ, 230 VAC, and 32 AMPS. The approximate full load amp rating for a 20HP motor at 460 VAC is 27 AMPS(see Ugly's,page 39), 32 AMPS is a...
