Piled Foundation Question

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on a project where the site is a steep hill with weak rock strata. Therefore, we've decided to go for piled foundations that bear into a strong layer of rock (after a ground investigation to determine this exact depth).

Has anyone got any idea about what type of piles would be reasonable from a slope stability point of view as well as a construction point of view. It would be near impossible to get a massive pile rig up the side of the hill so are there any options that work for constructability you can mention. We are also considering slanted piles to help the stability.

Thanks

I have seen them build temporary working platforms in order to do piling on a slope. I feel it would be extremely difficult to install battered piles on a slope, as you would likely want them to be battered to a slope on a similar plane to the existing ground slope. Feels like it would be like trying to put a straw in a capri-sun juice bag with only one hand.

I have no idea what the access is like on this slope, what kind of loads you need to resist, or how remote this site is. However, there are many smaller drill rigs that can handle slopes better than the large, top-heavy drills often used on large infrastructure projects. Look up smaller drill brands like Klemm, Hutte, Lodrill, TEI, Commachio, Geax, Tescar, and Mait, and check if any of these machines would be capable of drilling the type of piles you suspect you would need. Then check if any of the contractors in your area have drills similar to these.
