    Existing unreinforced masonry options?

JAE, With the following,"cut vertical slots in the wall, opening up the empty cells and install vertical reinforcing bars (with dowels to footings) and fill cells with grout after forming the cells closed." would you cut out a continuous vertical slot from top to bottom of the wall, slide the...

Rigid insulation placed under continuous concrete footings?

I am also working on a project where the foundation is a shallow frost protected and the rigid insulation is required below the footing for the design. I was leaning towards csd72's thoughts that if the allowable maximum pressure of the insulation should exceed the actual footing bearing...

    New Zealand Earthquake

Sounds like a similar quake hit them in September without major catastrophe, yet several buildings were damaged leading them to failure during this quake. Kind of brings up the thought that maybe there should be some urgency to assessing structures affected by quakes?

    elevated deck slab contraction joint

The joint would minimize random shrinkage cracking in the slab, maintaining a cleaner appearance. The ones we have specified would allow horizontal movement but not vertical. And yes that's a good point, the use of the diaphragm would have to work around the joints.

    elevated deck slab contraction joint

If you have a one way elevated slab, would there be any issues with contraction joints parallel to the slab span? Seems like it would be beneficial if the slab has an exposed finish?

    Cracked Tile

Thanks for your input. Spats, I did find some more info online that stated the same. They call it a crack isolation membrane or anti-fracture membrane that needs to be installed between the gyp-crete and the tile bed to separate any minor cracks that may occur in the gyp-crete layer from...

    Cracked Tile

I have a contractor that would like us to review cracked tile at an new residence that has just been built. The tile is something like travertine, softer than some with 16" square tiles, placed diagonal to the wood I-joists below. There is also 1 1/2" of lightweight gyp-crete between the top...

    Masonry Design Guide

Thanks for everyone's input. I think that info should keep me occupied for a little while. Dick, I am not sure I understand why you switch around choosing different producers to get the TEK notes?

    Masonry Design Guide

I am looking at getting a design reference for masonry. I already have the ACI 530-05, but am looking for something to supplement that. Any opinions on books?

    Structural Disclaimer Note

In our office, we deal with some smaller remodels and additions once in while where it does not make sense to draft up a separate structural drawing. In this case we will provide a PE stamp on the architectural drawings which the architect also stamps. We have a separate stamp that states we...

    Revit Structure

Atomic25, Now that you have pretty much convinced me not to look any further into Revit, what are some of the benefits that you have found? Thanks!

    Revit Structure

We are also interested in using Revit with some of our projects, partly due to our interest in the program and it's integration with RISA, and partly due to requests from our clients. We are just not sure that if it would benefit our types of projects which are mostly extremely large custom...

    question on truss supports

jike, So how would you allow it to move and still keep the lateral load transfer with the diaphragm if you don't use a slotted connection at bearing?
