    1.4 - fundamental rule (o)

AndrewTT, my experience with machining castings (for valves) is 2+ decades old, but machining fixtures will need some place to consistently located the part. We frequently machined them in two steps, the first to add locating surfaces, the second to add the machined part features. If this is the...

    Dimensioning a broken view

Mike, I couldn't find any built in method, but I work typically in SolidWorks and only use DraftSight in the model environment. I thought about setting up a predefined view in the sheet, bringing in two aligned views of each end of the part with a dimension between them that would regenerate...

    "half" dimensions

Is this situation one of the primary reasons fundamental rule 1.4(k) in Y14.5-2009 was added to the standard - it does not appear in the 1994 version? Or was this covered in a different area in the 1994 version? Curious, Diego

    arc length

Sojman, I missed that you are on 2006. Here's a screen shot. The first extrusion is the round pipe - the pipe length is used in a design table to vary the overall length. The second extrusion is the flattened profile. A loft connects them. The part is mirrored to get the overall length. Hope...

    arc length

Sojman, see if this helps on the flattened ends. Diegohttp://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=8c99e0f7-155c-494c-b025-e7227ce8201e&file=ladder_step.SLDPRT

Dragging a sketch while not in active sketch

Instant3D in features, not instant2D in sketch. Or double-click the sketch and change values in the popups and then rebuild. Diego

    How Big

When I was fabricating and machining I had three different size hammers, and a nice array of files, grinders, and a torch, plus presses to push things. Now that I'm modelling items at nominal size I don't need any of those tools - suddenly everything fits. I thinking of either selling them off...

    New Laptop for Designing

I'll recommend talking to Xi. They build great products for cad.

Solidworks 2015 part disappears visually but i know its there

I had this problem when SW decided that pressing the tab key would be great for hiding parts. [dazed]

    Startup drawing

BC the command is setcrddsp. Change the default from 1 to 2. You may also at times want to change the location of the coordinate system, this command is ucs, with options listed. regards, Diego

Totally New User - 1 Very Basic Question

http://www.computeraideddesignguide.com/getting-started-with-draftsight/ or other online tutorials. My old AutoCAD 2000 book was helpful for commands too.

    Startup drawing

BC, after you create your default template go to tools, options, system options, open, saveas, template file name for smartnew for the location of the default template you will use. Diego

    Plane Offset Different Distances

Thanks John, the controlling sketch is what was missing from my design table attempt.

    Plane Offset Different Distances

It's weird that you can put the controlling value - D1@Plane1, D1@Plane2, etc. - for a plane location into a design table but not control the value with the table. Diego

To part mark, or not to part mark

We part number stamp all military parts and many parts for some other OEM customers as required by their print or contract. Whenever possible this is done on sheet metal in the cutting program with number stamps and it costs very little to add. A few parts are laser etched if we delivery them...
