    Standard torque

I'm reading the question a little differently. The FAA expects a bolt to be torqued to "standard torque" in the absense of a specified torque. It assumes the joint is designed with the right size hardware to be torqued to "standard". Since the MS21043 and 44 nuts are described as tension...

    aircraft nut-plate installation and inspection

Generally speaking, nut plate are installed using a pair of 3/32 solid rivits. Replacement nutplates are frequently installed using CCR pop rivits. There are other types (ForceTec) installed in a cold worked hole. The rivits are only holding the nutplate against the torque of the fastener...

    15% ethanol in fuel

The senario I see on a pretty regular basis (privately owned airplanes), is that one part wears out, small loss of performance, the next part wears out, lose more performance, but blames it on something else (age, weather, bad gas), third part wears out, now it is hard to start, 4th or 5th part...

    Supplementary braking system?

I suspect it would be easiest to use a surge brake master cylinder on the A-frame, and plumb it into the existing brake hydraulics at the master cylinder. That would also require bleeding the brakes once the tow bar is connected, and then again when it is removed. A 12 VDC linear actuator...

    Straightening Formed Aluminum Parts

If the part needs anything more the hand pressure and draw clecos to pull it into position for I confirm that the part is in error, and not the structure it is going into, and then I send it back. And rework that is needed beyond trim to fit is treated as a repair, even if the part is new...

What color paint? There is a black oxide brass instrument screw available. 100 degree CSK. Aircraft Spruce carries them. MS24693

    Wrapping Exhaust Pipes

We (low budget race cars) do it to hide rusty headers and keep all that heat away from the firewall, fuel lines, brake lines, and air intake. I have never heard anyone credit keeping the exhaust warm to a performance improvement. There is always a performance improvement when you can reduce...

    Refuel shut-off valve closing time

Most refuel valves I have seen are electrically controlled, but operated by fuel pressure. The only valves I have seen motor operated are crossfeed valves and shutoff valves (with a specified cycle time of less than 3 seconds), and a normal cycle time of 1 second. .. The actual time will...

Rough cam lock surfaces on gas caps

If it was a homebuilt aircraft, why would it have anything to do with Cessna's experience in China? Did you ask where the guy bought that part? There is a big group of guys building homebuilt aircraft getting thier parts from hardware stores, lumberyards, motorcycle shops and marinas. I know...

transmission power required for VHF/UHF at higher altitudes.

This is more of a line of sight issue. The higher the altitude, the larger area you can see "line of sight" as the curvature of the earth does not hide areas at a greater distance. You also don't have to transmit through trees, building, etc. . . .. Broadcast satellites and UAV's don't use a...

    Cessna 152 oil coolers

You are correct in that the cooler will work just as well with oil flow in either direction. .. The hoses specified for the installation should only allow for installation one way (although a lot of people have misrouted the hoses, and have fabricated hoses that allow the incorrect...

    Pilot Co-Pilot

I'll pile on to dgapilot's answer. There is another criteria you can use to establish that the cushion (or any other part) meets the original specification, and that is the vendor control drawing, or material specification in the parts manual. If it is a new seat cushion you are designing...

Thin walled tubing pressure test spec needed

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ast/licenses_permits/media/RLV_Safety_Critical_Structures_Guide_v2.3_112205.pdf Para 3.2.6 spells out the requirement.

Thin walled tubing pressure test spec needed

Design it, build 2, cap both ends. Pressurize with 26 psi and see if it pops. If it hold, pressurize the other to 20 psi and see if it distorts. If it held it's shape, it passed proof testing. Proof each one you make as part of the manufacture/QC process before you tag it and deliver it.
