SAP2k Pushover and Tension Only elements

SAP2k Pushover and Tension Only elements

(OP)
Hi friends,

Let me ask for help in two simple topics. You will see I'm on the first steps of SAP2k learning curve :

1) I want to learn how to use the compression limit command in SAP 2000 8.3. I'm running a simple model analysis and want to make the bracing system acting like tension-only elements.

2) How to do Pushover analysis in SAP2000.

The 'mechanism' involved in these kind of FEM analysis is familiar to me when I'm using another soft and/or reading books (i.e.: I know that i've got to activate NL analysis and so on). But the theory isn't working right now with SAP2k. Not the theory or SAP, to be rigorous! ..... this is another problem, between the chair and the PC .... :))

Please tell me which commands should I use. It will be great if you can give me an detailed (simple) example. Help me to push the right buttons.. :).

Some tips here are much better than tons of phone calls to support.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Marco, assign tension/compression limits with a zero (0) input for compression in order to get a tension only member. Vice versa for compression only.

For pushover, you should assign hinges to frame elements. Also, in nonlinear analysis case use P-delta with large deformation option. I believe CSI has a 'watch and learn' video example, as well as some papers on their website. With version 8, you can run pushover analysis with either static and/or time history load
