Is there any design guide/tool/analysis that adresses Single Plate connections to Tube Steel Columns?  I am particulary interested in welded single plate connections against the side of the tube column supporting beams in shear connections.  When do we get beyond what is reasonable for the tube skin to withstand such a support condition?

RE: Single Plate connections to Tube Steel Columns

It would be neat if you could laser cut rectangular slots in both faces and put a thru plate, welded from the outside on both faces.  This way, you wouldn't count on out of plane stresses.  I'm not sure how standard this practice is, though.

Good luck.

This topic was covered a few weeks back.  Do a search.  In the mean time you can get the information you need from "Hollow Structural Sections Connections Manual" available from AISC, Steel Tube Institute, and AISI
