Extracting data from Excel Objects embedded in multiple Word docs

Extracting data from Excel Objects embedded in multiple Word docs

I am trying to analyze trends in data stored in multiple (~400) MS Word .doc files.  The MS Word 8.0 files have formatted text as labels and embedded (pasted) Excel worksheets used to store and perform simple calculations on the data.

We currently use an Access Database to store our data, but I need to utilize the old data as well to get a full view of trends.

I would like to find an automated means to extract this data (both the text labels in the Word .doc body and the data in the embedded excel objects in the Word .doc file).

I'm guessing the best way to do this will involve some sort of VB macro (of which I have limited experience, but learn quickly).  I tried using the "Get External Data" tool in Excel, but couldn't get it to work.

Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

RE: Extracting data from Excel Objects embedded in multiple Word docs

Have you tried importing the Word documents into Access? You might be able to set up each word document as a table and then performs database operations on each Word document.

That's what I would try first. Since the Excel objects have names (right) Access might recognize these, etc.
