(OP)
Hello,

The current residential house uses continuous footing/stemming wall for the perimeter, and uses pier and grade beams inside the continuous footing. Can a new attached addition being built on a monolithic concrete slab foundation? Or this new attached addition has to use the same foundation as the existing home? Btw, the soil report says the soil is highly expansive with a Plasticity Index of 27. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Is a slab a good choice on highly expansive soil?

RE: connecting concrete slab foundation with pier and grade beam foundation

Sounds like you have a soils report. What does it say for a recommended foundation type?

If you have good performance of the existing structure, match watch is there. Putting a slab foundation on highly expansive soil is asking for trouble.

Don't attach two parts of a building which are on different foundations - especially in an expansive clay situation.

Either match the foundation types or provide a good building expansion joint to separate the two structures.
