As3600 9.7 load on beam

Clause 9.7 gives effective width for slab capacity. Is it ok to use the same width as the loaded length of a supporting beam? So a point load at slab midspan might be more like a udl on the beam if the slab span is long enough and the beam span short enough.
 
Yes, if I understand your question correctly. This is for a beam supporting a slab which has a concentrated load. The reaction from the concentrated load can be distributed over the length bef.
I suppose it could happen that you have a lintel beam which is quite short relative to slab span. Sometimes the load could end up distributed over a length greater than the beam span.
