Is it possible to exclude certain parts of framing from being designed as part of SMF?
Is it possible to exclude certain parts of framing from being designed as part of SMF?

So i have this framing plan for a 4 story structure. I plan to exclude the columns and beams highlighted in red from SMF design and have them carry only gravity loads.
Im wondering what would the connection be like in that part when constructed in actual? Well first off, is excluding certain parts from designing for SMF even a practice?

- You may assume some elements are not being part of the lateral load resisting system , provided that, the remaining structure is satisfactory for seismic forces. .. These elements are gravity only elements . Have a look to your local seismic code for ( GRAVITY ONLY COLUMN ) etc..
- It will be sufficient to design such beams and columns as gravity load resisting elements and detailing as per R times displacements and rotations under seismic case..
