As the title states, how do you approach creating these interaction diagrams? All of the material in the CDH and other references I've consulted only show how to do rectangular columns. That being said, the CDH provides pre-made interaction diagrams so there has to be a way to do it.

Thanks a bunch.

The concept of creating an interaction diagram for a column of any shape stays the same - stress vs strain relationship, but it is much tedious in creating the diagram for a non-rectangular shape. I remember CRSI used to include the procedure and examples in its design manual.

Yea I was thinking about developing a speadsheet to make it easier to use, but the design aids are already really straight forward I'm thinking it might not be worth the hassle.

There are many spreadsheets that do that calculation. Not to mention a myriad of structural softwares with that feature available. There was a lively discussion with many links not too long ago that if you dig into it (especially Agent666's blog) you will get a peek into what calculations go into that type of analysis.

adn... thanks for the references.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?

I always like doing spreadsheets, or SMath programs. It really helps me undertand the methodology... from a learning perspective, it's easily worth the effort.

Also see:

which has my RC Design Functions spreadsheet for download, which includes functions for ULS design of circular columns, including open-source code. It also includes examples of using the functions to generate interaction diagrams:
