Hey Guys,

So I have a condition where I'm using a wide flange beam as a collector, however. it is discontinuous as there is a girder that it ends at halfway through the diaphragm and then another wide flange beam starts on the other side of the girder across from it. If I'm using these as collectors, do I need to connect them? I am thinking I'll use a steel plate from bottom flange to bottom flange, however, that will require me to make them equal depth to the girder. Any other connection Ideas?

Yea, if you're trying to collect load into this thing and need to drag the load further than the girder then you will need to design it for force transfer across the gap.

Detailing will need to be based off how heavily loaded this thing is. I would most likely just assume that the tension force exists only within the web (assuming that the web has sufficient area to handle the load) and do a bolted side cleat connection both sides of the girder to pass the load across. You would want to consider the impact of bolt alip in this connection though, so perhaps a fully welded connection is better to mitigate this.

@Greenalleycat Thanks for the answer that makes sense. It's not super heavily loaded I think bolts would be fine here, do you just through-bolt the bent plates to each other through the girder?

Revv - I would detail it as typical shear connections with angles, but use slip critical bolts in the web to shear tab connection. That way the erector can still use slotted holes for fit-up. Just make sure you check the standard shear connection for your tension and prying in the bolts.
