Hello - I am trying to model an existing drainage system in HydroCAD 10.1. The system consists of 3 tiered benches channels (2 channels per tier) breaking up a long, 3:1 slope. The channels terminate at culverts which tie into a central, free-discharging, header pipe. When looking at the design write-up, the culverts were checked for headwater (all assuming free discharge) and the main header pipe flow capacity was simply verified to be less than the total inflows.

My goal would be to model the system as-designed and for actual conditions (if different). To model as designed, I anticipate modeling the inlets to the header pipe as catch basin w/ culvert outlet and model each segment of the header pipe simply as a reach (open channel). A new node added at each inflow location to the header pipe. But to model this correctly, I believe each segment of the header pipe should be modeled as a catch basin with culvert outlet, as the headwater at the upstream nodes should be affected by the tailwater at the downstream nodes.

Let me know if you feel I am thinking through this correctly. Appreciate any help!

If you are concerned about entrance losses and tailwater effects, then you need to use the pond/culvert scenario. A reach will always operate under normal flow conditions, without regard to entrance losses or tailwater.
