Dear All,

Good Day, I have query please help me out.

Multiple process (GTAW+SMAW+SAW)supplementary impact testing PQR run as per new change in ASME Sec VIII Div-1 2019 Code.

(1) Require clarification for single-sided and double-sided weld as per Table UG-84.6 while considering multi-process coupon.

(2) Sketch attached for each weld process deposit along with a number of sets required and size of sample tested.

Please review it and waiting for your valuable comments, so that proceed further for impact testing.

Thanks

RE: Table UG-84.6 (HAZ Specimens Set Removal) for Supplementary PQR as per ASME Sec VIII Div-1 2019 Code

Hey Leo,

Good day!!

Single Sided defined as " A weld joint where heat applied from one side only"

Double Sided weld defined as " A weld joint where heat applied from both side|" In your above case and attached sketch ; GTAW and SAW considered double sided and SMAW considered single sided.

For your second question , you should read UG-84 of ASME Sec VIII Div-1 2019 Code thoroughly especially UG-84 (g) location and orientation of sampling in HAZ and Table UG-84.6.

which clearly defined , prepared sample should have center line in width along the notch as per table UG-84.6 with (Notes).

Weld Surface as per UG-84 defined as " The surface of the last deposited layer of weld metal shall be considered the weld surface" so in your case SAW considered double sided which required two sets as per UG-84.6 Table but in your case, on one sided SAW deposit weld surface 2.5 mm which is exempted to impact testing and other side 27.5 mm which required one set(3 specimens) with in range of 1/4t to 1/2t by keeping center line with width along the notch which should be tested at required MDMT.

You can proceed further for testing but it is better to review sketch and sampling to your nominated AIA if job is U-stamped.

I hope it works.

Fahad
