Hi,

Im interested to get peoples thoughts on using cable ties in lieu of tie wire for securing ligs in the boundary elements of concrete walls. Clause 17.2.5 states "tie wires shall be used..."

Does anyone know why the code is so restrictive (shall not should..) for using tie wire given plastic chairs and wheels are used in slabs and columns all the time.

Would you let a contractor use cable ties in lieu of tie wire?

thanks

I suspect the soft iron tie wire is a lot cheaper and with 'real' reinforcing placers is likely a lot faster... what will you do with the free outstanding end? trim it off? more work... let it project through the slab surface? Structurally it will have little or no effect.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Tie wire is doubtless cheaper, but plastic cable ties should do the job if you use enough of them. And they would not lead to the annoying rust stains sometimes caused by tie wires being left too close to the edge.
