Continuous steel beam

A reinforced concrete beam can be made continuous over a column by extending top reinforcement over the column. In a steel beams how could this be accomplished and what type of connection is specified on both sides of the columm (simple connection or moment connection) is there any examples in the AISC manual ?

There are many ways to make continuous steel beams. Check out on AISC Manual 2 - Connection Design.

Just make the beam a single piece, brace it properly where necessary, and it will be continuous without modification.

If your beam will be fabricated as multiple pieces, there are indeed a bunch of way to splice them for continuity. One popular method is shown below. Where practical, engineers often attempt to place the splice connection at regions of low bending moment (probably not right over the column).

Thanks for your reply, but how does the beam bear on the column?. Does the beam rest on top of the column how exactly do they connect lets say a W-shape beam to a W-shape column ?

A quick google should answer these questions faster. But now that I'm here:

If the column ends at the beam then you just have a cap plate on the column and the beam rests on top. A few bolts and stiffeners to finish things off.

If the column AND beam are continuous through the joint the one element would normally be spliced unless you want a heap of eccentricity. Normally such a joint would have the beam connected to the column via moment connections OR stub beams welded on the continuous column ready for moment splices to the beams.

Where wide flange steel beams are made continuous over top of columns, I would say that the details shown below are among the most common. Much depends on the type of cross section used for the column, the column orientation, and whether or not you want to transfer moment from the beam to the column (in steel, you usually don't unless the frame is part of the lateral system).

I like stiffened end plates and try for 1/6 or 1/7 of the span... Mp approx 0... and generally terminate the stiffener approx 1" from the top flange.
