is there in aci any requirement about minimum longitudinal reinforcement in seismic tie beams?in ACI 318-11 21.12.3 provisions are given for dimension and tranversal reinforecement.I can t find those related to longitudinal reinforcement and I want to be sure that there is no such requirement in aci.

RE: Seismic tie beam minimum-ACI

In general, ACI is more concerned with detailing than strength for design in high seismic activity regions. I don't recall there is such requirement, unless things have changed.

RE: Seismic tie beam minimum-ACI

Personally, I would first determine the longitudinal reinforcement required based on the dictated axial load.

Then I might compare that with a "column" 1% limit for axial members found in chapter 10....possibly applying the "architectural column" 50% rule where you can assume a smaller concrete section if the concrete is much larger than that needed by analysis.

Thx
@ JAE what about direct tension? Is there any minimum of longitudinal bars?Is there any provision in ACI about direct tension design as that for axial compression?

RE: Seismic tie beam minimum-ACI

I’m not aware of any min reinforcement for tension members- but pile/column Link’s can be either tension or compression.
