Hi,

Im new to this. We are having a discussion in our office in a field were not very experienced in. If a plate test was carried out with a 450mm Plate or 600mm Plate, for ground which requires 100kn/m2 load capacity, what should the plates be tested to including a standard UK factor of safety?

Thanks.

hm...I do not really understand your question

Klaus,

Thanks for your reply. The ground is to achieve 150KN/m2. What KN should be loaded on to a 600mm plate to achieve this? This is probably a simple question for someone experienced in this.

I think you are dabbling along way out of your comfort zone if you're not able to work this out.

You’ll need to call a geotechnical to assess the result, judging by your question.

In short, 3 times your allowable so 450 kPa. Work out the load to get that amount of pressure over the area of your plate.

Also, plate bearing tests are a waste of time for assessing bearing capacity. You’re only assessing the soils to 2 times the plate diameter. So to 900mm or 1200mm.

A borehole with lab testing / SPTs or HDCP (if in granular) would be better
