L channel corner weld

L channel corner weld

L channel corner weld

(OP)
I have sheets of 0.080 inch aluminum - approximately 8 inches wide and 150 inches long.  I want to make an L-channel from two of these sheets.

The L-channel will be standing with it's 150 inch axis normal to the ground.  The corner weld will be under a light load.  Approximately 4 pounds.

I'm planning on fillet welding the corner as shown below:

---------| \
         |    \
   sheet |      \
         |  Weld  \
_________|__________\
         |          |
         | sheet    |
         |          |
         |          |
         |          |

I need to figure out what axial length and at what interval the welds should be, if placed in the above configuration.

Thanks very much

Jose

RE: L channel corner weld

You are a brave soul my friend for attempting that.  work must be securely braced,  and even then there will be a lot of warpage.   .080  is not friendly  in long lenghths.

my first attempt would be a 1/2" tack every 6" with the smallest ceramic cup you can get and a 1/16 th tungsten if tig,    and if mig,  which will result in much less heat transfer and warpage ..use the smallest wire you can get.
and you can never have too many test pieces!!

are you doing this so as to save getting a 16 X 150" pc and braking it?
