Hi Everyone
We are field welding a HSS2x2x1/4 to a HSS8x8x1/4, flat part of HSS8x8 only. The AISC manual shows the "Effective Throat" for flare groove in Table J2.2. If we use 5/8R where R=2t, this becomes 5/8*2*(1/4)=5/16". This is the "effective throat". However, the weld strength based on equation J2-3 is Rn=Fnw*Awe; Awe is shown on Table J2.5.
For Tension Normal to weld axis, Table J2.5 shows Fnw = 0.60Fexx, Awe in inches^2 as "See J2.1a".

My question is - how do you figure the Effective Area, Awe, using the "Effective Throat" from J2.2 or J2.1a? Which do we use, J2.1a or J2.2?

Multiply the effective throat times the effective length of the weld?

If I understand your configuration correctly, the smaller HSS is lapped on the flat portion of the larger HSS. The welds are flare bevel along the length, thus no actual beveling of the HSS's takes place. Seems Table J2.2 would be applicable, J2.1 and J2.1 are for Partial Joint Penetration which would require some beveling of the parts (HSS's).

All I know is P/A and Mc/I
