What about the crane operator?

Took awhile for vessel to go astern until after the crash! The real engineers are in the engine room, and the captain/mate looses his job and perhaps license. Vessel company has a big expense to pay for. How does this qualify as an Engineering Disaster?

"How does this qualify as an Engineering Disaster?"
It is a disaster caused by mis-use of engineered things.

Might be engineering-related.

I wonder if it will turn out to be a failed CPP controller failing to put reverse pitch onto a propeller. Bridge team rings for half astern at the usual time, takes a few seconds to realise that way isn't coming off as fast as they were expecting, so rings for full astern - and then by the time they realise that that's made matters worse rather than better, it's too late to do anything beyond piping "BRACE!" over the main broadcast. Happens disturbingly often.

The news articles mention high winds and currents that the ferry was apparently unable to overcome; to that degree, it's an actual engineering failure if that's true, since the system design failed to operate in an environment that should have been within the design space.

The ferry looks like it came away without a scratch.

Yes it might be a momentary controller or mechanical propeller pitch fault, but the vessel went quickly astern soon after bouncing off the pier! I guess the high wind and current subsided. Years ago I was in the office of the NY Water Taxi when over the radio announced the Staten Island Ferry had hit the pier. That was a more substantial pier crash!
