Good morning All - I'm a rookie to the site. If I am in the wrong forum, please redirect me...thanks in advance for your patience!

We supply steel to threaded rod manufacturers. I'm a metallurgist, but am only familiar with machined or forged applications. Two questions:

1. Is deformed bar synonymous with reinforcing bar? Thus, does TABLE 2 Nominal Dimensions for Type II (Deformed) Bars apply to rebar and ALSO to threaded rod? i.e. is cold-rolled threaded rod considered "deformed"?

2. Is TABLE 1 Nominal Dimensions for Type I (Plain) Bars meant to be a definitive list, or just a useful reference for some standard sizes so that the user does not have to perform the calculation for nominal area? One user asserts "you must pick the closest size" although the bar we supply is a diameter that is not listed. We have asserted that the cross-sectional area must be calculated from the actual bar diameter used in the full body test. The distinction is important because it directly affects the calculation of the UTS, YS, and ROA (reduction of area).

I suggest that you call and discuss this with one or more of the major threaded bar suppliers in the US, such as DSI or Williams Form Engineering Corporation.

I am not sure what tables you are referring to, but a deformed bar is synonymous with a concrete reinforcing bar in the structural world. The "deformed" portion of the bar refers to the ridge like protrusions around the bar. Deformed bars and threaded rods are two different animals in my neck of the woods.

Threaded tie rods and tieback anchor bar tendons are most often A722 steel having a guaranteed ultimate stress (GUTS) of 150 ksi. These A722 bars can have hot rolled, very large and loose threads or have impressed, smaller, closer spaced threads. Check out ground anchor brochures from Williams Form Corporation, DSI, and Skyline Steel. You will see information on both types of threaded A722 steel bar tendons.
