I have been offered a valve manufactured from Plate, its the first time I have ever been offered this , it usually cast of forged. I am looking to get a Butterfly 12" 600# valve manufactured what do you think?

Colmac... for us to help, details are essential.

Rough dimensions/configuration of the finished part. Is this a 'odd/complex' configuration... or very simple/straightforward config?

Alloy/temper/form of the material 'was' and 'proposed'. NOTE: if manufacturing changes temper [in-process HT] then from 'what-to-what-to-what'?

Machined-part finishes or other treatments?

Any special performance requirements?

NOTE. I would have suspected the alternate might be MF forged block... for the rough size description it would seem that massively thick plate would be required.

Regards, Wil Taylor

Valves have been and are being manufactured in plate. Gate valves manufactured from plate were used at the North Slope, Alaska facilities. Cost was the primary consideration. Cost and delivery may be your consideration as well. Otherwise, provide more info as per WKTaylor.

For this type of specific butterfly valve design under ASME B 16.5, agree with weldstan because plate can be used.

I love welding, and have a certain amount of disdain for castings (actually the difficulty getting high quality castings), but would not want to be anyone's FOAK (first of a kind) on your exact size valve, in your exact service.
