Two dead, four injured at the Big Bend Power Plant run by Tampa Electric; not much detail yet, but an explosion is reported to have occurred during routine maintenance of a slag tank on one of their coal-fired boilers. While this disaster may not be directly resulting from an engineering failure, there always tends to be some knowledge worth gleaning from such occurrences.

RE: Explosion at Big Bend Power Plant

Sad news, power plant accidents always seem to hit home with me after the tragic accident at our station.

Hopefully lessons can be learned so it doesn't happen again. sad

An article with some updated information - the workers were trying to unplug the tank. According to the article, enough slag flowed out of the tank to cover an area 40 feet across with 6 inches of molten slag.

Will likely be some time before an official cause of the incident is announced. One thing that struck me at the bottom of the article is that, back in 1997, TECO may have had a similar occurrence at the Port Sutton plant involving four workers (with less severe consequences).

RE: Explosion at Big Bend Power Plant

thanks for the update. unfortunate about some of the comments about this tragic event.

I worked Power Plants as contractor, but I never looked into ash handling to have some ideal what they were doing
