Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

(OP)
Hi All,

My company recently received a fabricated rectangular mild steel tank for use in a wastewater application. The tank contains several flange type nozzles and an integrated stainless steel manifold. Upon arrival of the tank we have noted three issues of concern from a vendor in which we have noted three primary issues:
1- incomplete welding around exterior circumference of slip on flange type nozzles. Some of which are causing leaks.
2- sealing surfaces of slip on type flanges have been damaged during welding.
3- stainless steel manifold process pipe welds do not show full penetration in welded areas. Additionally, manifold sections are not level/square in nearly every axis.

My question is this - Our specifications for the product do not contain any specific requirement for welds. Are there standard, best practice requirements for welding of tank vessels and process piping which can be applied here to argue the case for warranty repair? I have a downloadable non-conformance report if you anyone interested would like to see the quality issue we are talking abou

Thanks!

RE: Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

EHough,
Unfortunately you get what you paid for.
If you made no quality requirements prior to purchase you cannot then try imposing quality requirements after you receive it.

You mention you have nothing in your specs regarding welds - do you have anything nominating fabrication requirements ?
Cheers,
DD

RE: Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

You ask for a car and they delivered a Tata. It was delivered with a one cylinder chain saw engine and no tires.

You didn't say what kind of car, nor did you say it needed an engine or tires. You received what you asked for.

Best regards - Al

RE: Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

Further to my post above, how can you have a non conformance report ? - what code / standard does it not conform to ?
Cheers,
DD

RE: Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

As above, what were the specific words in the contract?

Without reading them, you may have a watertight case for damages and money back or repairs under a warranty.
Without reading them, you may have nothing but junk.

RE: Requirements for Welded Piping Systems

Did you ask for anything, like a leak test?
If all you asked for is a tank in accordance with a drawing, without some statement of quality, you get what you paid for. Did you not even ask it to meet jurisdictional requirements? If you at least did that, you could research the jurisdictional requirements and assure that they are in compliance.
