In case you've ever wondered how a gear generating hob is 'backed-off' or 'form-relieved'; this video shows how it's done in a form-relieving lathe.

Sorry Mike, I don't know all that much about these old beauties.
 
I loved that website for The Vintage Gearcutter! Spent some time watching the videos of him making various types of gears with his manual machines. Those type of skills are not acquired easily.
