Hi noticed something new with NX9... Nothing strange in there of course..

When placing a dimension on a drawing when dragged it "snaps" to something and shows two dashed arrows on each side of the dimension. (see atached screendump)
I was wondering why it is doing this, and to what it is snapping to...

The dimension is snapping to the 'margin'. If you do not like this behavior, you can turn off the "position on margin" option in the dimension dialog (origin -> alignment).

Hi Cowski.

What margin are we talking about?

In the NX help, go to the "what's new in NX 9" and go to the section: CAD -> Drafting -> geometry margins for dimensions and annotations.

This is not all that different than the 'margins' that we've supported for Ordinate Dimensions for years, only these apply to regular linear dimensions/annotation. Note that this can be used as an alternative displaying and snapping to Drafting Grid points.

cowski (or anyone else), where exactly is the dimension dialog where this can be turned off? Is this changing a default setting, or are you talking about just changing a particular dimension?

If possible, I would like to know how to turn this off as default.

Thanks

First off, WHY DO YOU WANT TO TURN IT OFF? Is it not doing what it was designed to do?

But the question is moot since I can find no way to disable 'Margins'. My advise is that if you don't want to use them, then ignore them. They don't create any sort of permanent relationship between dimensions and view/geometry.

When you start the dimension command, expand the Origin -> Alignment section of the dialog and turn off the "position on margin" option. Create your dimension and press the "close" button. Your preference should be saved to dialog memory and the "position on margin" option should be off the next time you create the same type of dimension (you might need to turn it off for each dimension type).

Just a little extra in case it helps. If it is on and all you need to do is move an existing dimension some. You can always hold the ALT key in while adjusting the dimension and it will move freely so long as you hold the ALT key down.

cowski, thanks - just what I was looking for.

Kenja824, that's what I've been doing up to this point.

John, I'm not sure what it's designed to do, other than put the dimension at some predetermined point that the software thinks it should be. I prefer the freedom of putting the dimension exactly where I want it without having to press ALT or jumping through any other hoops.

Generally speaking, I think default functions should be as simple and independent as possible, with any added features (such as snapping to a location) to be just that - ADDED features that can be added by the user if he/she wants them. Having to search around and get on a forum like this just to find out how to turn something off shouldn't be happening.
