Who knows? Is it because without crude oil supplies from the South the Cracker would have to stop? And as the incognito engineer says it could somehow damage the entire operation?

Rotating machinery is most reliable when it is running. Shutting down in a harsh environment can be very destructive. Perhaps they just want to keep all units running.

Why would you imagine any "Journalist" has a clue about engineering or science ? It would be a guessing game to try to figure out what information he was given.
