Questions for someone smarter than me:
If I have a helical cut gear being shrunk fit onto a 50mm dia shaft and the gear is 20mm thick how much torque can it transmit before either a: the gear moves axially along the shaft because of the thrust of the helical cut, or b: the gear spins on the shaft? Torque is being transmitted from the shaft through the gear.
Would splining and shrink fitting the interface change the scenario of the gear moving along the shaft?
How much force could a 'industry standard' circlip, 3mm thick, on a 47mm dia, oppose. ie, if I place a circlip on the shaft either side of the gear how much force could they hold, and how does that relate to the amount of torque being applied through the shaft to the gear.
Helix angle is about 20 deg.

You could calculate the shrink fit contact pressure [Thick-walled cylinder]& apply a friction factor to this to get the force/torque to slip. R.G.Budynas "Advanced Strength & Applied Stress Analysis" & J.F.Harvey "Pressure Component Construction" have good sections on Press/shrink fits.

Watch out for bad stress raisers from retaining ring grooves in shafts. How about a split shaft collar bolted on?
