Hi all material gurus.

Maybe I'm lost , I intend to make a small 19 mm diameter 1,5 mm thick to be used as a spring shoulder.
This shoulder will be rested by a 4 mm thick AISI 1010
carbonitrided to HR 15 N 88 = HRC 56 .
It work on a car's clutch damper.
My first idea is to use a AISI 1040 , but this small piece is hard to make on automatic lathes, could I use a 10L38 steel ?
Could this steel be heat treated to reach a surface to whitstand such feature.

Yes, plain carbon steels that have lead additions can still be hardened.  You may also want to consider non-lead containing free-machining steels such as 1137, 1140, or 1144.  These steels are rephosphorized and resulfurized, so machinability is much better than plain carbon equivalents.  Beware that the sulfur additions have a significant effect in reducing fatigue strength and fracture resistance.
