# Plates as Slabs

## Plates as Slabs

I have a situation where I am trying to model the relative stiffness between a set of beams and a concrete slab. I have an 8" slab drawn as plates and supported on column concrete members.

I know with member design you can control the crack factor of concrete members. I cannot find this for plate members.

Is there anyway to model this reduced stiffness other than reducing material properties?

Just to clarify...Is this slab supported by beams or is it a conventional flat 2-way plate sitting on vertical columns.

Are you trying to model the concrete plate so that it engages the beams to form composite action? - Maybe try modeling a T-beam with the slab as the flange.

There is not currently a way to set an "I cracked" factor for slabs in the same way as you would for beams or columns.  Though, I believe this is going to be added soon for the "wall panel" elements.

Ok, so I would just have to modify the E or thickness if I wanted to include a reduced section due to cracking?

Yes, you would change the E or the t value to adjust the flexural stiffness of the slab.

Keep in mind, of course, that the flexural stiffness is proportional to t^3.
