We are designing a truck loading area for a self storage facility in New York State.
The largest anticipated vehicle is a 53' long "drop frame" semi trailer with an extended sleeper cab. Ordinarily, I would use a WB-67 in the design however the dimension from the king pin to the rear wheels on the WB-67 is considerably longer than that of the "drop frame" trailer used by most interstate moving companies. As a result, the WB-67 in Autoturn is more difficult to maneuver than a "modified" WB-67 matching the dimensions of the "drop frame" trailer. We are able to shaow that the modified truck works on the site but not the standard WB-67.
Has anyone had any experience using a modified truck in Autoturn when presenting the design to a traffic commission or other land use board?

The facility is not on an Access Highway and is more than 1 driving mile from a Qualifying highway which leads me to think that the 48' trailer / 65' overall limits apply.
I believe however that there is an exception to the 65' rule for interstate moving companies in subdivision 4 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law. What is not clear is whether it allows for a 53' trailer or just an extended cab pulling a maximun 48' trailer (thereby exceeding 65'). Any information on this would be appreciated.
