Google Books has available online Appleby's Illustrated Handbook of Machinery published 1897-1903. The 5 (6?) volumes available are
I. Prime Movers (1897, 1901 & 1903 editions available),

II. Hoisting Machinery (1897),
III. Pumping Machinery (1901),
IV. Machine & Hand Tools (1897),
V. Steam and Electric Plant (1903),
Preceding 4 titles available at

V. Contractors' Plant, Railway Materials, etc. (1903)
[Numbering seems correct, volume V apparently has 2 titles or parts.]

VI. MINING, COLONIAL AND MANUFACTURING MACHINERY. FOR TREATING ORES, CORN, COFFEE, RICE, SUGAR, COTTON, AND OTHER PRODUCTS. is referenced, but I couldn't find the download.

Very nice contribution --- I don't have room to download this but I am going to keep it in my favorites. It is interesting to see how things have changed and more-so to see how some things have not changed in all the passing years.

Thanks

I actually have a hard-copy of Appleby's Cyclopaedia of Mechanics. It is in 2 volumes. Fascinating reading.
