I have been asked if chill rings can be used to repair butt welds in 6" sch 40 suction piping for a hydraulic system... does anyone have any experience using chill rings in this application? We have typically used TIG for two passes as a seal weld but apparently they did not have a qualified welder available. Thankyou, Bob L

I see no reason it shouldn't be done as long as it doesn't add enough restriction to cause a problem. Maytag

I would not use them under any case.

We had a batch of pipes made where the vendor used backup rings, the slight gaps hold trash and prevent cleaning the pipes with the blow through foam plugs.

Possibly in a suction pipe they might be ok, but I would not use them at all.
