480 Volt 3Ph Cab. On 208 OK ??
480 Volt 3Ph Cab. On 208 OK ??
(OP)
We are adding a three phase service to a ajoing shed by our fab shop. I have and would like to use a C/H 480/277 4Wr-3Ph switch panel with adjustable main. The thing is I have 208/120 3 ph as the primary shop power. Given the cost of these things, I would like to use the 480 panel I have on the 208/120. Is there any forseeable problems with this idea, manily I'm concerned about issues with the breakers "seeing" the load correctly. Thanks in advance, your opinions are greatly appreciated.

I do not think you will have any problems with the circuit breaker sensitivity as it relates to the line current. However there are some other issues you may wish to consider. The branch circuit breakers to fit inside the 480 volt panel are going to be very expensive compared to 208 volt breakers, unless the 480 volt panel already contains the correct size breakers for your circuits. You should also consult a qualified electrician to make sure the installation is done according to your local electrical code. You should also have your local electrical inspection authority approve the installation.
