Hi,

We are trying to find directional mechanical properties of a thick walled composite tube (3.5" OD X 1" ID). We know the layup, but it is becoming too complicated to find the young's modulus, shear modulus and poisson's ratio in three principal directions using conventional methods (we use MATLAB). Are you aware of any existing code that can calculate these properties given the ply lay-up?

Does your Matlab code use classical laminate analysis to estimate the properties? If so I know of no simpler way to deal with this sort of problem. It does have a few limitations, particularly for a thick cylinder, but laminate analysis should be simple to set up and run. What aspect of the analysis is proving complicated? What are you using the calculated properties for? (Is there some requirement for accuracy?) I take it that this is a conventional laminate apart from its thickness, not a 3D weave or something?
