Hi All,

A new revision of ASME Y14.5.1 Mathematical Definition of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles is nearing completion. Y14.5.1 is an important standard in quality assurance and metrology as it defines actual values for geometric characteristics. The new revision supports ASME Y14.5-2009 and contains significant developments in datum stabilization and actual values for profile tolerances.

You can order a free hard copy of the public review draft from ASME at the following link:

We are looking forward to feedback from GD&T users in industry. Comments are encouraged and will be accepted by ASME until Feb 19, 2019.

Let me know if there are any questions and I will be glad to help.

As per usual, I'd have to echo 3DDave there. The giant, dark "DRAFT" watermark made it.....distracting at best to read in certain cases..

Even commenting on the obliterated formulas is difficult because, unlike actual mathematical texts, the equations in nthis standard are not numbered for easy reference. As far as I'm concerned every formula that's blacked out in the Draft is in error.

They sent out hard copies... If they really needed a watermark on the draft they should have used something that only shows up when copied or scanned, rather than blanking out 5% of the text on every page.

I'm not sure what happened with the watermark - it looked fine in the original and in test prints. Something must have happened when the public review hard copies were produced - my apologies if there were things that were not readable.

How was the "watermark" done? I'm guessing Microsoft word and 90% gray, but it was so variable from place to place.

I gave up looking at it about half-way through because so many unnumbered equations were obliterated.
