Xray film interpretation

I was given an xray film of an electric flash welded pipe. Everything looks good except for an area where there seems to be some metal loss adjacent to the weld. First thing that comes to mind is corrosion. However knowing my boss that seems too easy. (he likes to give the new engineers small "homework" assignments like this) Is there anything else that could have caused this dark spot. Another thing that threw me off was that this spot has a bit of a rectangular shape to it.

I presume this is pipe that is in service, if not, let us know. If this is an existing in-service pipe, the suspect location could even be internal wastage from erosion (depending on the fluids in the pipe).

Tell your boss you want to perform ultrasonic testing of the suspect location to confirm what you are seeing on the RT film.

It is a good source.
Check that out before giving your boss an answer.

Assuming you mean electric resistance welded pipe, try reviewing manufacturing pipe methods to see whether there is anything that could lead to the indication, for example scarfing.

I trust that your x-ray has a calibration visible so that you can gage the size and depth of the indication?
What about a visual exam report of the OD condition. A handling mark from erection?

Are you seeing the penetrameter placed on the film,or is it the impression of the electrode which might have formed on the pipe.

Since you are in the learning phase,it is best advised to have a prior knowledge of the job i.e visually inspect the workpiece,know a little about the processing details,(a casting,forging,weldment or heat treat defect etc) before you begin to read the film.

Is this the logitudinal seam of an elctric resistance welded pipe or a circumferential flash butt weld? Are you sure that the indication is outside the the fusion zone?
